I should point out that the furthest I had ever been was Germany, and that was with my parents many years ago. On my own I'd got as far as North Wales and Scotland, but only for very short periods. I'd never been anywhere on a plane before and had no idea what to expect when I landed, except that the idea was for my American friends to show me how they survived and I would join in. Things turned out rather differently than planned.
